Salt is corrosive by design — it's applied to melt ice, and that same chemical reaction accelerates rust and corrosion on metal it contacts. Unlike dust or mud, salt actively works on painted and metal surfaces the longer it sits, especially once it mixes with slush and gets forced into seams, wheel wells, and the undercarriage where it isn't visible.
Most winter paint concern focuses on the visible body, but the undercarriage takes the worst of it — brake lines, exhaust components, and frame rails all sit directly in the salt spray thrown up by your tires. A winter rinse that only covers the visible exterior misses the area most likely to actually corrode.
A plain water rinse of the undercarriage and wheel wells every one to two weeks during active salting season meaningfully reduces buildup, even without a full wash. Many self-serve car washes have an undercarriage setting specifically for this — it takes under a minute and costs almost nothing compared to the corrosion it prevents.
On visible paint, salt combines with slush to form an abrasive film that dulls the clear coat if it's left to sit and dries repeatedly. A ceramic coating or fresh sealant application before winter gives salt and slush less to grip onto, meaning it rinses off more easily instead of baking onto the surface between washes. Going into winter with unprotected, oxidized paint is the worst-case scenario — that's when salt does the most visible long-term damage.
